We’ve had a lovely transition from spring to some very summer like weather. I hope everyone has been able to spend time outside enjoying this long awaited season and all the greenery it has to offer.

At the May 18th meeting, the GMUW Board of Directors made the decision to recruit a full time Executive Director. This is very exciting news! I will continue on in my interim role through the summer and look forward to working with the hiring committee as they interview and select a candidate for this important role.

Throughout my short time here I have been so impressed with the dedication and passion of the people who work for GMUW and with the many agencies who work together to tackle the challenging problems our communities face in the areas of Education, Income, Health and Basic Needs. We are fortunate to live in a state where these collaborative efforts really make a big impact in the lives of the communities we serve.

As we move into a new campaign year, I want to thank all of you for your generous support. Your contributions to Green Mountain United Way really make a difference.

2014 -2015 Campaign Concluded

Everyone at Green Mountain United Way is pleased to announce that we ended our most recent annual fundraising campaign as of April 30th having received pledges and donations of $512,257.45. This is an amazing amount that so many of you were a part of in the last six months.

“Many thanks to all of you who contributed to a successful Green Mountain United Way campaign in 2015. Your donation has made a huge difference in the lives of our Vermont neighbors in need in the counties of Washington, Orange, Caledonia, Essex and Orleans. It’s not too early to be planning your 2016 campaign gift! Every dollar helps,” says Catherine Hamilton, Vice President of Consumer Services and Planning at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont, and Campaign Chair.

Also, from our Northeast Kingdom Campaign Chair, Bob Swartz, “The people of the Northeast Kingdom have shown their strong support for their neighbors by giving to the Green Mountain United Way in its 2015 campaign. Donations totaling more than half a million dollars prove their generosity. GMUW provides funds for education and social services in the NEK communities. Thanks to all who have given so generously. I am proud to be part of this community.”

Your continued assistance will help ensure that GMUW will be able to further its initiatives in Education, Income, Health and Basic Needs over the next year helping more people to live healthier, more stable lives. Thank You!

GMUW Announces Successful Letter Carriers Food Drive

On Saturday, May 9th, the 23rd annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive for the benefit of local food shelves was held across the nation. The national figures are not yet in, but typically over 74 million pounds of food are collected. In the Green Mountain United Way five-county service area, nearly 19,000 pounds of non-perishables were donated.

These 19,000 pounds were distributed to the following 24 area food shelves: St. Monica’s Food Shelf and the Hedding Church in Barre, the Trinity Church and Christ Church Food Pantries in Montpelier, the Duxbury Elf Shelf, the Waterbury Food Shelf, Mad River Valley Interfaith Council in Waisfield, the Middlesex Food Shelf, CERV in Northfield, the Marshfield Food Shelf, Worcester Food Shelf, Williamstown Food Shelf, the Bradford Area Food Shelf, Chelsea and Tunbridge Food Shelves, the Randolph Area Food Shelf, the Orleans Food Shelf, NEKCA in Canaan, Island Pond and Newport, the Hardwick Food Pantry, the Lyndon Area Food Shelf, the Jay Food Shelf and the United Church of Newport.

“This being our first year of participation,” said Karen Hoskey, Director of the Worcester Food Shelf, “we are so grateful to the people in our town for their donations. We know that next year we’ll do even better.” Catherine at the Marshfield Post Office got creative, copied the NALC event cartoon image in black and white and ran a coloring contest for the children in and around Marshfield. She then posted their finished products in the front window of the post office creating awareness of the event among their customers.

This is the largest national food drive that occurs on the second Saturday in May each year. May is strategically chosen by the NALC as a time when food pantries everywhere are near empty after the long winter.

Many thanks go out to all who donated to this food drive and, especially to the letter carriers who took time out of their busy mail delivery schedules to pick up the food and help distribute it to the food shelves.

Calling All Bowlers

On Saturday, June 6th, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Twin City Lanes on the Barre-Montpelier Rd. in Barre, the Green Mountain United Way will be holding its 4th Annual Bowlers Unite. If you enjoy bowling, or even if you haven’t ever bowled, this is the event for you.

Form a team with 3 or 4 of your friends, come out for a good time and try to win lots of prizes. This is a fundraiser for GMUW for which each bowler must raise a minimum of $50 to play. Prizes will be awarded for the individual and team raising the most money, plus lots more. You can raise your entry through personal sponsorships.

So, challenge your friends and family, complete the entry form found at the web address shown below, and come out on June 6th for a fun afternoon. The funds realized from this event will be used to support critical programs and services led by GMUW for those in our communities here at home.

Mark your calendars now for the 10th Annual Green Mountain United Way Golf Classic sponsored by United Parcel Service (UPS) for the benefit of GMUW to be held on Friday, July 17th at the Barre Country Club.

Registration will start at 11:30 a.m. with the shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. The entry fee for a foursome is $500 and includes greens fees, 2 carts, registration gifts AND dinner. Singles are welcome with advance notice to give time to match you up with other singles to form a team.

Many prizes will be awarded during the dinner for Hole-in-One, High Score, Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, LowGross/Net and more!

June 6, 2015: 4TH Annual GMUW Bowlers Unite at Twin City Family Fun Center on the Barre-Montpelier Rd. 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Get your team together and join the fun.
July 3, 2015: Independence Day. GMUW offices will be closed.
July 17, 2015: 10th Annual UPS Golf Classic for benefit of GMUW at the Barre Country Club with registration starting at 11:30 a.m. Prizes, carts and dinner included.
