NALC Food Drive Results

On May 9, 2015, residents of our five-county region participated in the 23rd annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive for local food shelves. An amazing 18,802 pounds of food were donated for 24 different food shelves scattered around Caledonia, Essex, Orange, Orleans and Washington Counties.

“This being our first year of participation,” said Karen Hoskey, Director of the Worcester Food Shelf, “we are so grateful to the people in our town for their donations. We know that next year we’ll do even better.” Catherine at the Marshfield Post Office got creative, copied the NALC event cartoon image in black and white and ran a coloring contest for the children in and around Marshfield. She then posted their finished products in the front window of the post office creating awareness of the event among their customers.

Many thanks go out to everyone who contributed non-perishable food items during this one-day drive, which is so important for many families throughout our area. In Vermont, over 13% of families are considered food insecure and nearly 20% of our children do not have enough nutritious food to eat on a daily basis.

Be sure to participate in next year’s 24th annual Letter Carriers Food Drive, already scheduled for May 14, 2016.
